Starting my Garden Part 5: Things are Recovering

My last post about the garden was a rather sad one, but thankfully the hail damage happened early enough in the season that I could replace my loss quickly. I even decided to save some of my hot peppers and they are all very bushy and full of peppers! I'm gathering enough to eat and will be canning some beets soon. We have been getting some rain on a fairly regular basis (without the hail!). So I'm happy to not be carrying water anymore, and my plants (and the weeds...)are thriving. The only thing I would change is planting everything much closer together because weeding is a daily maintenance job that takes a lot of time. I guess I can't complain much because I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to grow my own food to offset rising food costs and shortages. I hope to continue this journey and continue learning for as long as I can.

Now onto pictures! Don't judge too harshly on the jungle of weeds, I am the only one working on this and it can be hard to keep up!

Hard to tell, but there is a second row on the left that needs weeded desperately. But I don't need to go to the store for salad greens anymore

Zucchini have slowly been coming in, and if you know anything about zucchini, you will have too much eventually

Jalapeno peppers have started coming in, I have so many in the fridge already! It's been so hot out here they have been thriving.

This is an aji rico pepper, which is a sweet/spicy pepper. I have 3 of these, and they all managed to survive the hail damage and still produce tons of fruit

This is my favorite section of the garden. I have cosmos flowers planted in between my tomato plants (which have suffered a bit with the 90 degree days) and it looks exactly like I pictured in my head

The row at the top are the spicy peppers, then below are the bell peppers. I love the marigolds I have planted among them...just not all the weeds that surround them!

My corn is coming along well for having such a small crop, the seeds germinated inconsistently so hopefully next year is better

My bounty of beets, cucumbers, jalapenos, and carrots. I have more cucumbers and beets in the fridge, stay tuned for canning recipes! I am hanging carrot greens to dry for seasoning. The greens are edible and taste sort of like parsley so I want to try them. Beet greens are also edible, you can use them in salad greens or wilted down like spinach...but I'm sorry they taste like dirt to me

And lastly, a beautiful sunflower on a cloudy day. I have an entire end of the garden that is just one long row of sunflowers not blooming yet. This one is among the corn.
