Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

It's fall hunting season which means it's time to bake cookies to enjoy with a cup of coffee hoping a deer or turkey shows up. It is tradition that Pap and I make his mother's recipe every year which is not the one I've included here. Her recipe is one that I don't share outside the family but the one I've created and listed below is pretty close. I didn't know my great grandmother as she passed away before I was born, but Pap can recall her baking and filling lard cans to the brim with cookies and homemade potato chips for the farmers and hunters of the valley. The cookies pictured below are from her recipe, to make another batch would be too many cookies!

Ingredients:

1 cup softened butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 T vinegar)

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1 cup instant oats

1 tsp cinnamon

1 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions:

1) First of all, this recipe is best made when done by hand. I get the butter extra soft by placing it a metal bowl and placing the bowl on top of the woodstove. Or you can turn your stove burner on and have the bowl near (not on) it

2) Cream together the butter, sugar, vanilla then add the buttermilk and eggs

3) Add all the dry ingredients (just throw them in, it'll be fine) and mix well until batter is thick. It will be wet and very sticky, that's okay!

4) Spoon 2" spoonfuls on a greased baking sheet and bake 350 F for 8-10 minutes. If any get too brown, those are best when dunked in milk or coffee.
