This is easily one of my favorite cold-weather recipes made by both my mom and Gram. They each made it slightly differently, I think mine closely resembles Gram's way. I think she normally used a ham hock for the large bone but I opted for a bone-in ham steak. I removed the small bone to make some broth then added chicken broth for more flavor. It's very simplistic but very comforting.
Ingredients (Broth):
1 ham bone from ham steak
5 cups water
3 smashed garlic cloves
2 sprigs dried rosemary
1 bay leaf
1 cup chicken broth
Ingredients (Stew):
1 large ham steak or ham hock, cut ham into 2" chunks
3 cups frozen green beans
3 cups potatoes diced 1.5" cubes
Instructions:
1)For the broth, boil all ingredients for 2 hours on medium low, strain and set aside.
2) Add the potatoes and green beans to a crockpot, add the cut ham steak (add the bone too)
3) Pour the broth over top. I like this to be more of a soup/stew so I add either more chicken broth or water to cover everything
4) Set crockpot on low for 4-5 hours
