Bread

This recipe is very easy and makes for great sandwiches, or if you just want to toast a couple slices to dip in olive oil and balsamic vinegar (I used to do this on a daily basis to the point I bought a third loaf pan for more bread!). My only issue that I can't figure out is I find large cracks along the top/side of the loaves while baking, but maybe it's me and not the recipe. It gives the bread character and it tastes great, so I won't complain. Sometimes I will add cheese on top or some herbs in the dough for more flavor. This recipe makes 2 loaves.

Ingredients:

2 cups warm water

1/2 cup sugar

1 1/2 T yeast

1 1/2 tsp salt

6 cups flour

*Optional for a savory dough: herbs, garlic powder, Italian seasoning

*Optional for top: grated sharp cheddar or parmesan

Instructions:

1)Mix water, sugar, and yeast and allow to sit for 10 minutes

2) Add in the oil and salt to the mixture

3) Add the flour 1 cup at a time by hand or use the dough hook attachment on the stand mixer. Add the seasonings if using

4) Knead or mix for 7-9 minutes until the dough has pulled away from the bowl

5) Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise for 1 hour in a cold oven

6) Punch down the dough (removes air bubbles) and knead for 1 minute

7) Divide into 2 parts and place in lightly greased loaf pans. Cover and rise 30 minutes

8) Add the cheese if using or lightly brush with olive oil. Bake 350 F for 30-35 minutes
