Behind Homemade Harvest

Hello and welcome to my blog! My name is Sarah and I am based in central PA. I started this as a way to share some of my favorite family recipes that have been passed down over the years and some recipes of my own. The outdoors has always been a big part of my life as I have been an avid hunter for nearly 15 years. I also enjoy playing with my cats, gardening, and knitting.  Thank you for visiting 😊

Brining and Roasting a Whole Chicken

Roasting a whole chicken can take a lot of work (all day the way I do it!), but there's so many uses for the leftovers for lunches...

The Fluffiest Cornbread

Many cornbread recipes have an insane amount of baking powder and my mom absolutely hates the taste. She went on a search for a different...

Venison Chili

For me, nothing beats a bowl of chili with some cornbread on a cold, rainy day. The cornbread recipe I will make a separate post for as...

Mom's Chicken Noodle Soup

I called my mom one day for her recipe which she apparently came up with on a whim when I was little. She said I had a hard time eating...

I may end up posting it later, but my mom started making chicken noodle soup when I was very little and has used the same recipe ever...

It's finally fall, which means it's soup season! Butternut squash soup is one of my favorites so I figured it would be a good recipe to...

Shepard's Pie with Venison

Shepard's Pie is traditionally made with ground lamb or beef, but I decided to try it with venison and found great results! I have never...

Homemade Salsa

Chips and salsa is one of my favorite snacks, so it's no surprise that this was something I wanted to try to make. I ended up making 2...

Pap's Sticky Buns

Pap used to help make these sticky buns in mass quantities for fall festivals. This makes quite a bit; I've included the original recipe...

Borax-Free Laundry Detergent

I started making my own detergent because everything is so expensive, and making your own detergent I find is so much cheaper. With...

Bread and Butter Pickles

This recipe goes back to my Pap's sister who has since passed away. Gram has been using this recipe ever since, and they definitely don't...

Jalapeno Popper Mac and Cheese

I was recently craving some mac and cheese, and as I was making it I realized I had some things in the fridge to make this recipe (except...

Roasted Garlic and Basil Spaghetti Sauce

Between my tomatoes, Gram's tomatoes, and tomatoes on sale at the store, I was able to successfully make my first canned batch of fresh...

Mom's Potato Bread

Okay, so this recipe also falls under "Family Recipes," but I think bread deserves its own section. My mom has been making this for as...

Strawberry Rhubarb Jam Bars

I made a lot of strawberry rhubarb jam this year and realized I'm not going through it very quickly. Mom always made a really good jam...
